How do I get to Independence?
You will meet Captain Pat on Dock C right by the Marina Office at American Yacht Harbor in Red Hook. She will take you to Independence, which is moored nearby, in her dinghy.

What time do I have to be there?
Our typical meeting time is 9:15 am. However, Captain Pat is happy to accommodate you. Discuss your schedule with her when you call or click here to email and make your reservation.

What time do we get back?
Usually around 4:00 pm, but we can be flexible. Let us know what your schedule is and we'll work with you.

I'm arriving on a cruise ship. Can I still go on Independence?
Sure! Just take a taxi from your ship to American Yacht Harbor. Discuss your ship's arrival and departure times with Captain Pat when you make your reservation, and she'll make sure to have you back to American Yacht Harbor in plenty of time to get to your ship.

Can I bring my kids?
Of course! Independence and her crew are kid-friendly ... Captain Pat's kids grew up on Independence, and now her grandkids go sailing, too! (See pictures on the Photo page.)

What should I bring?
Bring a towel, hat, sunscreen (no oil or spray, please), and camera. You can bring your book, if you'd like to read, and don't forget your sunglasses! If you don't want to wear your swimsuit, you can change on board. Please bring a photo ID for each person; sometimes the Coast Guard asks to see them.

Is lunch included?
A delicious hot lunch is included: Pasta primavera with fresh, boat-made tomato basil sauce, garlic bread, and our signature dessert - Death by Chocolate (let Pat know if you have any allergies or dietary preferences). Our full open bar has everything from bottled water to fruit juice to Bloody Marys, and we make a terrific traditional rum punch!

Is there anything to eat on the half-day trip?
We offer a light buffet during our half-days sails, with snacks such as cheese and fruit platter, homemade hummus with crackers and veggies, and deviled eggs. As with the full-day sail, our bar is open.

What if I have food allergies or dietary restrictions?
No problem! When you contact us to make your reservation, let her know what your allergies or restrictions are and she'll design your meal.

I don't know how to snorkel. Can you teach me?
We sure can! My first mate is an excellent teacher. We have all snorkel gear on board, as well as flotation vests, noodles and float mats.

Do I have to get off the boat?
Nope! If you want to sit in the shade and read, take a nap, or lay in the sun, that is okay with us. Of course, you will have to disembark when we get back to American Yacht Harbor, even though you won't want to.

Is there a bathroom on Independence?
Yes, but we call it a "head."

How do I make a reservation?
The best way is to email Captain Pat, since she is usually out sailing during the day. Let her know what day you want to go sailing, how many in your group, and if you have any time constraints or food requirements. She'll get back to you very quickly to confirm.
